How do I find someone that is reliable?

Generally, like most things in life, the best way is by personal recommendation but if you're new to your area it may take some time to build up contacts and you'll need to explore other avenues.

Agency or Advertise?

If you don't find what you want through your personal contacts then advertising is the most common way of getting someone, but, it may be worthwhile looking at agencies if you feel that they will give you extra piece of mind.

Agency

Going through an agency should be fairly straightforward; it can be as simple as you telling them what sort of person you need and they send someone over to you.
Some points to remember when going through an agency:
  • Ascertain whether the agency is actually employing the tradesperson or are they simply finding them for you to employ. Who is your contract with?
  • What background checks have they carried out.
  • Ask to see references.
  • Whose responsibility is insurance for the tradesperson while they are on your property.
  • Cost may be higher as the agency has their own costs to cover.

Advertising

Whether you place the ad or you respond to an advert you are going to have to do some work before you hire someone:
  • It's essential that you meet the service provider face to face.
  • Get written quotations and contracts specifying exactly what is to be done.
  • Check references.
  • Check their insurance cover.
  • It's worth checking with your own insurance provider to see exactly what they will/will not cover.
  • Beware of cash-in-hand!
