Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit
While you may already receive Working Tax Credit(WTC) and/or Child Tax Credit(CTC) as a family, you may still be eligible even if you go back into paid employment.
The rules surrounding who is entitled and to how much, are too complex to present in an easy format on this website!
HMRC who administer the tax credit system are the best people to contact to see if you're eligible; their website has a straightforward section which will give you the definitive answer here:
"Do I Qualify"
Impartial advice can also be obtained from your local
Citizens Advice Bureau. Their link is at the bottom of this page.
To ensure you obtain the correct amount of credit you're entitled to here are some tips:
- Declare accurately all sources of income
- Keep all documents, payslips, receipts for childcare you receive
- Keep records of all communication with HMRC - this may help if there is a dispute in the future
- Inform HMRC immediately of any change in your circumstances which may affect your eligibility
- Seek advice from HMRC, Citizens Advice or other appropriate body if you have any queries
- Do not bury your head in the sand - if you think you're being overpaid deal with it now rather than face a costly overpayment demand later!
